About  Thomas Spence

Therapy can involve difficult work, but it can also be a place for curiosity, connection, humor, and discovering parts of yourself that may have gotten lost along the way.

I became a therapist because I wanted to help people better understand themselves, their relationships, and the experiences that have shaped the way they move through the world. I am especially drawn to working with individuals and couples who feel stuck in patterns connected to trauma, anxiety, betrayal, relationship stress, major life transitions, or disconnection from themselves or the people they care about.

Throughout my career, I have worked with people across different levels of mental health care, including crisis services, residential treatment, outpatient therapy, and couples work. Those experiences have taught me that healing rarely looks the same for two people. Sometimes therapy means processing experiences from the past. Sometimes it means learning how to regulate what is happening in your body right now. Other times, it means having conversations with your partner that you have been avoiding for years.

My approach to therapy is grounded, collaborative, and practical. I believe understanding why a pattern exists is important, but I also want therapy to help you create meaningful change outside of the therapy room. I integrate EMDR, somatic approaches, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, hypnotherapy, and other trauma-focused and evidence-based interventions depending on each client's needs.

When working with couples, I help partners slow down the cycle they have become stuck in and better understand what is happening underneath the conflict. We may work on communication, rebuilding trust after betrayal, emotional connection, conflict management, intimacy, boundaries, or learning how to turn toward one another again.

With individuals, I often focus on the connection between past experiences and present-day thoughts, emotions, relationships, and physical responses to stress. Therapy can provide space to process what happened while also developing tools to feel more grounded, regulate emotions, challenge patterns that no longer serve you, and reconnect with the person you want to be.

Starting therapy can feel vulnerable, especially when you have been carrying something on your own for a long time. My goal is to create a space where you can feel comfortable being yourself, explore difficult experiences without judgment, and move toward healing at a pace that feels manageable for you.

What Guides my Work...

What guides my work... My work is grounded in authenticity, curiosity, collaboration, and respect for each person’s lived experience. I believe therapy works best when you feel safe enough to be honest, understood without judgment, and actively involved in deciding what healing and growth look like for you.

I take a holistic approach to therapy, paying attention not only to thoughts and emotions, but also to relationships, past experiences, values, and the ways stress and trauma can show up in the body. I integrate evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, somatic interventions, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, hypnotherapy, and other trauma-focused therapies while tailoring the process to your individual needs. I believe insight is important, but therapy should also help you create meaningful change in your everyday life.

Our work may involve understanding patterns, building emotional regulation skills, strengthening communication, rebuilding trust, processing painful experiences, or learning how to respond differently when old patterns are activated.
